According to the Audit Commission there is potential for councils to make significant efficiency gains by promoting Direct Debit payment. It is estimated that Direct Debit costs between 1p – 4.5p per transaction, whereas other methods can range between 38p - £6.
Local authorities have seen a reduction in recovery activity as DD uptake increases, which results in fewer phone calls and letters/summons to issue.
